The new financial year won't fix what you carry into it

1 July 2026

Reset your habits

Hello Reader,

Today is the first day of a new financial year.

For a lot of business owners, there's a quiet sense of reset that comes with that. A clean slate. A chance to do things differently. The problems of the last twelve months feel like they belong to a different period now.

That feeling is understandable. It's also worth being careful with.

Because the new financial year doesn't change the decisions you haven't made yet. It doesn't resolve the priorities that were competing with each other in June and are still competing now. It doesn't fix the cash flow pattern, the unclear plan, or the habit of adjusting things week by week until the original direction is barely recognisable.

What carries over isn't just the numbers. It's the way the business is being run.

There's a concept I keep coming back to from a conversation I had recently about business turnaround. The idea of playing the golf ball from where it lies. Not from where you wish it was. Not from where it looked last quarter. From where it actually is today.

That's the honest starting point for a new financial year.

Not optimism. Not a fresh set of ambitious targets. Just a clear-eyed look at where the business actually sits right now, and a realistic plan for what the next 90 days genuinely need.

If the last year felt busy but hard to read — if you were moving but not always sure you were moving in the right direction — the date changing doesn't shift that. The same patterns will show up again, usually by the end of July, once the fresh start feeling fades.

The question worth sitting with today isn't what you want to achieve this year.

It's what you are going to do differently so that the decisions you make now still hold in October.
